A Best Friend
Some people say it was “love at first sight.”  When a person sees another person, and he or she knows right then and there that they are in love.  Believers in “love at first sight” say that it is an instantaneous feeling, of which one is absolutely certain, like being hit in the head with a frying pan.  Non-believers might say that you have to meet someone, become friends, and let the relationship develop from there.  While, I agree that relationships must be built, I also believe in “love at first sight.”  I believe in it because I’ve experienced it.  Usually, it’s a romantic kind of love that two people feel between each other, but not always.  In my case, I experienced “love at first sight” when I met my best friend, Allison McSherry.
I remember the day clearly.  She was a sophomore who had transferred into school, and I was a shy and unconfident freshman.  Among many other girls, we had decided to go through the process of Women’s Recruitment, and we were placed in the same group to attend all of the events for the week.  Thank goodness for that, too, because we each had the other to complain about all those “stuck up bitches” to.  Well, actually, I don’t remember much complaining, only that my feet hurt the whole time from wearing heels; for the most part, I remember feeling awkward and not wanting to talk to anyone.  And I think that’s how she felt also because she was only talking to me, and we said very little.  But it felt like I already knew her, even with the few words we exchanged.
I didn’t go through with the end of the Recruitment process, but after those few days, I kept wondering about Allison.  Did she end up joining a sorority?  Did she drop out of the process just like I had?  Or did she just end up deciding that she didn’t want to be part of the Greek system?  And every time I passed her on campus, I would want to talk to her and ask her all of those questions, but I never did.  I would only smile and casually nod or say “Hello.”
A year later, I went through the entire process of formal recruitment again, and I had decided to join Alpha Gamma Delta.  I knew it was the right decision, and one day while hanging out on The Hill with a bunch of Alpha Gams, she stopped by; and I knew from that point that she was going to join it too.
She is probably the best friend I’ve ever had, and it was truly “love at first sight.”
